freshwater fish discovered

top-news

Recent research has revealed significant insights into the classification of certain freshwater fish species native to the Western Ghats. Specifically, the previously misclassified nemacheilid loaches, namely Mesonoemacheilus remadevii and Nemacheilus monilis, have been reassigned to a newly established genus called Koima. This new classification is based on a distinctive combination of morphological and genetic traits that set Koima apart from other nemacheilids found in the Western Ghats and across the Indian subcontinent. The identification of this genus not only highlights the uniqueness of these fish but also underscores their endemic nature within this biodiverse region. The recognition of Koima enriches our understanding of the rich aquatic biodiversity of the Western Ghats, as it encompasses these two species that were formerly categorized under Nemacheilus.
